Here are some pros. . .
The best thing about being an affiliate is that you are your own boss, can set your own hours, and you can do the work from anywhere in the world. Of course, that's the beauty of any online business, its portability.
Affiliate marketing also offers the great advantage of not having to store, ship, inventory or in any other way handle merchandise. Remember, you are NOT marketing your own product, but someone else's. So, typically, they handle all the product related issues, including customer service. This means, no overhead. That means you can run the entire business paying for nothing more than your internet connection.
As far as income potential, some companies pay their affiliates as much as a 75% commission on all their sales, plus some generous residual bonuses for memberships and/or autoshipments. Needless to say, the actual income you generate will depend on the actual cost of the product, and how many sales you can actually generate. In essence, it is up to you how much money you actually earn. Your effort will determine your outcome. For those with a real entrepreneurial mindset, this is actually the most enticing part of online affiliate marketing.
Some Words of Caution
As great as all that sounds, though, remember that you must first do some basic research. In your research, you should aim to discover which companies are considered the best to join and find out what type of products they are selling. Of course, the best thing to do products or services you already know something about or find a topic that you feel passionate about. For example, if you are passionate about the education of children, you may want to consider researching businesses that sell teaching aids for children. This will become particularly important if you decide to promote through article marketing, since you will need to spend quite a bit of time researching and writing on that area.
Next, you will want to research the venues in which you can sell the products you have chosen. The most cost effective method is through your own website or blog. They are very easy to create and many can be created for free. Most hosting companies will actually have templates that you can use to help you get your site set up. The most difficult part will probably be choosing your domain name. Your site name should be based on keywords associated with your topic and business and it should be short.
Now for the Cons
The biggest con when it comes to affiliate marketing is, ironically, the one that draws the most people toward the business, and that is the commission/compensation structure. See, it is really enticing to hear that you stand to earn a 75% commission. But, when that commission is for a $30 product, how much are you actually going to have to sell in order to make enough to cover potential advertising costs?
Always keep in mind, that this IS a marketing business structure. You WILL NOT make ANY money at all, if you don't advertise the product. It doesn't matter how good the product is, it will not be found by anyone willing to buy, if your work is not done properly. Advertising online can be totally free. But, it can also get really expensive really quickly.
So, when considering online affiliate marketing as a possible business, research the actual costs of the products you will be advertising. Explore potential for residual income, and multiple streams of income within the same company. Plan, realistically, how much you need to sell in order to turn a profit. Then, decide what kind of advertising will bring you the best ROI (Return on Investment). Only then can you decide if online affiliate marketing is the answer for YOU.
